I never expected to, nor even dreamed of, going to a university. I was a horrible student in both grade and high school and was pretty much delegated to the classes designated for the scholastic misfits and orphans. I did excel at art in grades 4-8, but unfortunately the subject was not offered in high school. A group of us visually talented students formed a ‘Poster Club’ and we plastered the school walls every Thursday with creative posters advertising school functions like dances and sports events. It became a highly spirited and fun completion amongst the handful of young artists every week. I lived for this event while racking up ‘Ds’ and ‘Cs’ in all things academic. I was bored to tears and escaped to elaborate day dreams…which ended in my working in various auto factories in my hometown for 4 years in the late 60’s. Two fortunate events happened back to back to change my life. The first was I was fired from my job for having long hair, but thanks to my union I was reinstated plus awarded approximately 6 months of back pay for the time I was off work. The second life changer was that the Canadian Universities opened up a trial program for ‘Adult’ students of which i was a perfect fit for the criteria needed to enter a school on probation. I entered the Art Program at the University of Windsor in 1970. Nirvana achieved.
